Medical compression hosiery exerts a pressure or compression against your leg to reduce venous distension or keep your veins from sagging. As a result, the flow of blood back to your heart is increased, and venous pooling and swelling is reduced. In combination with the flexing of the calf muscles, compression hosiery protects you against further progression of your existing venous disorders.
Compression hosiery must be worn every day. In order to achieve the desired therapeutic effect, compression hosiery must exert its highest pressure at the ankle and its lowest at the thigh. You should wear your stockings whenever you are out of bed. The necessary compression that is indicated for your particular venous disorder must be prescribed by your doctor.
